What It Will Take To Learn The Russian Language
Foreign language requirements in school force students into language classes in order to graduate. Most of these students forget foreign languages as fast as they learn them. They simply see no reason to learn a second language. In response to the needs of our global economy, many now find themselves learning a new language as an adult. Mastering a new language does not happen over-night. It takes time and persistence to accomplish this task. There are no exceptions, because learning Russian requires persistence and time.
Initially, learning any new language can be intimidating. Generally speaking, adults find it harder to learn a new language than do young persons. Thinking patterns are deeply entrenched in adults. This is the hardest hurdle to clear for adults learning a new language. This is also why persistence is so critical to learning any new language. Lifelong thinking patterns must be re-routed so to speak to allow alien words to become familiar. To increase the chance of succeeding in the learning of a new language, set a reasonable, achievable goal. Remember, it takes time!
It is hard work to learn a new language. There are no shortcuts or magic tricks that can replace adequate time spent learning the vocabulary and grammar necessary to speak or write a new language. There is absolutely no alternative to learning the words (vocabulary) of a new language. Any spoken or written language is built around words. At first, grammar is easiest memorized but as the learner becomes more familiar with the new language, grammar will most likely begin to fall into place as a result of previously memorized sentences.
There are people that soak up new languages like a sponge. Others are not so lucky and they find themselves in a struggle to learn. Struggling students of new languages must practice persistence; persistence allows them to outlast the struggle and learn the language.
The reasons people chose to learn a new language are as varied as the students themselves. Some do it simply for self satisfaction. Some do it as a contingency for their further employment. Our global economy has made it necessary for many to learn new languages to carry on international business operations. When the Communist regime fell in Russia, many Russians immigrated to the US. Many Americans have learned Russian to better communicate with their new neighbors and co-workers. Whatever the motivation, it still takes time to master the Russian language.
Rather than attempting to learn a language on your own, accelerate learning by taking advantage of online courses, private tutoring and local college classes. Most students respond faster in a structured learning environment. For those who need a super accelerated crash course to quickly learn the basics of the Russian language, there are numerous, good courses available online. For serious students of the language, extended courses are preferable. Referring to above, remember that it takes time!
Taking advantage of our multi-cultural society is a great way to become more familiar with the Russian language. Go to Russian language movies, Russian heritage museums, libraries and art shows or any other place where the Russian language may be spoken or written. If you know someone who is Russian, ask them to chat with you in Russian. Interacting with a person in their native language is a great way to learn the tone of the language.
Be patient and work hard in your language lessons. From the start, accept that it will take time to learn Russian. With time and persistence you will master the Russian language.
