Three Ways To Tune Your Guitar And Increase Your Pitch Sense
Keeping the instrument in tune belongs to the essential skills a musician can learn. An out-of-tune guitar just doesn't sound good, and can make it impossible to perform with other musicians.
Not only does an in-tune guitar sound better, but learning to ensure that it stays well tuned helps you learn the sense of pitch you will need to play in public places or with other musicians. Utilizing an electronic tuner is simple, but when you are competent to tune without one will greatly aid your development as a musician.
Here are three alternative ways to tune a guitar with no electronic tuner.
1. Matching pitches with another instrument (simplest)
If you're a novice, the quickest way to tune by ear is to get the pitches from someone else.
Should you be playing with woodwind or brass players, make certain to request your notes in concert pitch. As an illustration, someone playing a B-flat trumpet will need to play her D to produce a concert C. That means to match all six strings of the guitar in standard tuning you will require her to play F#, B, E, A, C#, and another F#.
Just turn the peg to match pitch with each new note the other player gives you.
2. Fretting the notes for the following string (intermediate)
This may be the most common procedure to tune. Just play the lower string for the fret which will produce the note matching the subsequent higher string. To tune the D string, fret a D for the A string, which will be the 5th fret. Then turn the peg on the D string until the pitches match.
Do not forget, if you happen to press too hard on the string it will make it go out of tune. You'll want to be sure that you're relaxed, and pressing the strings as lightly as possible to get a clear tone. You must also make sure you have one string in tune before starting for a reference pitch. Of course, your strings themselves matter too. You always want to be sure, for example if you're playing acoustic, that you have the best acoustic guitar strings available.
You'll then tune each string to the pitch of the lower string. Each string is tuned to the fifth fret except the B string, which is tuned to the G string on the 4th fret. After you're done, play some chords to ensure the full instrument is in tune with itself.
3. Tuning with harmonics (advanced)
If you want to tune this way, you have to know how to play a natural harmonic. To do so, just barely touch a string at the 12th, 7th, or 5th fret. Unless you press excessively, you'll hear a natural harmonic as you pluck the string. For the 12th fret you'll hear an octave above the open string, and an octave plus a fifth or two octaves for your 7th and 5th, respectively.
The low E string played with a natural harmonic two octaves above the open string pitch (or fundamental) will produce the same pitch as the A string played with a natural harmonic an octave and a fifth above the fundamental - an E, equal to the pitch of the open high E string.
You can do this with every string except the B. For the B string, play the 7th fret harmonic on the low E string, which will match the open B when both of them are in tune. Just tune the B string to match the harmonic pitch. Next, tune the high E to the B string with harmonics just like the rest.
Learning to tune your guitar is a fantastic means by which to become familiar with and discover ways to match pitches, which will help greatly regarding playing with other musicians or making one's own adjustments on the fly. Every one of the three methods has its own advantages, and each will help you sharpen your talent differently.
