Is there a cheap way of getting a laptop adapter/charger fixed?
We have a Advent 7040 laptop, its main adapter broke, so I bought a new one for £25...that sodding thing broke as well, so I want to get the original fixed. Is there a cheap way of getting this done? Know of a company that does it? (Banging my head against a brick wall!!!)
Answer:
It totally depends on what the "problem" with it is.
Tons of things can go wrong:
1) The cord, at any point, between the power source and plug and between the power source and laptop adapter. This can be easily, and (relatiavely) cheaply repaired. If you don't do it yourself, you should expect to pay 10-30% the cost of a new one.
2) If it's not an issue of a cord, but is the part that plugs into the laptop, this can be easily repaired. If doing it yourself is out of the question, you should expect to pay 20-40% the cost of a new one.
3) If the problem lies within the adapter itself -- and is NOT a question of connectivity, breaking, tearing, pulling loose, shorting -- you are better off replacing the adapter. Cost to repair would be 50-75% cost of a new one, but they would certainly require an upfront fee before seeing what the problem was within the power supply.
Also --- make totally sure the adapter you get is the original adapter for your laptop. The volts and amps needs to be spot on - all the time - or you run a very real risk of getting a $30 deal that ruins a $2000 laptop. (over time, that causes components to fail, fry traces, short out connections, blow capacitors, etc)
