Bass Guitar Beginnings
Most music has always had a bass line be it written or implied, today the bass part is fundamental to most of the music we listen to. Whether it is using the foot keyboard on an organ, playing a standing double bass with a bow, or playing the tuba, all music has needed a under-structure, and this is found in the form of a bass line. We tend to notice the emptiness of when music lacks a bass line or implicit bass line. With styles of popular music changing and evolving, plus the increasing demands of the working musician for portability, playability and loud volume, there was a strong need for a new type of bass instrument. The bass guitar was then invented.
Though the very first electric bass guitar was invented in the 1930's it never achieved the critical mass of popularity until the Fender bass guitars brought the electric bass to the masses. The equivalent prior instrument, the upright bass existed for hundreds of years prior to this. The bass guitar was different from the bass that everyone had been familiar with for many years though. Held and played horizontally like a regular guitar, the electric bass differed from it's predecessor, the upright bass not only in it's orientation during playing but also in it's ease of use and portability. Electric bass players were no longer burdened with a huge lumbering akward instrument to carry and protect. With the exception of a longer neck and having 4 strings instead of 6, the electric bass guitar looks very much like the electric guitar as they both have a solid body that is often shaped the same. The method of sound production is different from that of an acoustic instrument with a sound hole to provide natural amplification, the Fender bass guitars are plugged into an electric amplifier and the pickups on the body, under the strings send this electric signal to the amplifier which then outputs the sound from it's speakers. With four strings tuned in 4ths just like the four lowest strings of a regular guitar except tuned an octave lower, the bass guitar is similar to the guitar and guitarist sometimes play bass and vice versa. It is played with a variety of techniques including fingering, thumping, picking, slapping and thumbing. Advanced players can also play certain chords and creatively use harmonics. The bass is in all probability one of the closest interacting instruments to the drums; it's because of this relationship that the bass guitar is a prominent rhythm section instrument. The combination of bass and drums and their unique interaction can completely influence the feel and vibe of the music.
